“I feel like care leavers and estranged individuals are getting the support and platform they deserve, and I can't wait to see how This is Us grows and inspires the community further.”
Working with Ellen and the Unite Foundation on the creation of This is Us has given me a taste of copywriting and inspired me to pursue a possible career using my creative writing degree (almost finished!) in advertisement and branding and hopefully working with more charities.
For This is Us, we wanted to make the voice match the message – that care leavers and estranged people are individuals with their own aspirations and that the Unite Foundation is there to support them on their journey, like a friend in trying times. We kept the text short but informative, and most importantly conversational, because this project has been about opening up the conversation around care leavers and their futures.
It has been an incredibly rewarding project. When I first got an email asking whether I would like to apply I was excited, I knew that this could be my way of giving back to Unite Foundation, after their support at uni, and a way to begin helping more people in the care leaver and estranged community. The project has helped me not only gain work experience, but also a sense of positivity and confidence moving forward into the next year, which has been much needed. I feel like care leavers and estranged individuals are getting the support and platform they deserve, and I can’t wait to see how This is Us grows and inspires the community further.
It was a joy to work with the team, to meet other individuals who were from a social care background or estranged, and to produce something new and meaningful. Even though Covid stopped us from meeting up and sharing ideas over a cup of coffee it was still a great, welcoming experience!
